Department of the Navy Chaplaincy

The Navy places the birth of its Chaplain Corps on 28 November 1775 when the 2nd article of Navy regulations was adopted by Congress which encouraged daily divine services aboard its ships. Navy chaplains are first mentioned by name in Congressional journals on 6 January 1776, allotting their share of prize money; then again on 15 November 1776, establishing their pay at $20 per month.
